Tone

Tone:

Definition: the tone of the poem is the setting or the way it is read. There can be a various ways of reading a poem through different types of tones.

Example:

"Into the night hold me tight
Love me babe I need some light
What's wrong and what's right
When shadows dwell and abide

Sad sad sad in blue
For sad sad sad you
The moon is all bluish tonight
Is there some star shoot in sight
To wish upon
For sad sad sad you

Into the night take a flight
Feelings, touch, everything out sight
Love me with feelings ok
Come come babe now closer stay

Sad sad sad in blue
For sad sad sad you
The moon is all bluish tonight
Is there some star shoot in sight
To wish upon
For sad sad sad you"

By Peter S. Quinn

By this poem, you can tell the tone of this poem is sad, because it is about depressing thoughts, and/or feelings.

Significance: The importance of "tone" in a poem is that the tone is what gives the poem (in a way) some intresting aspects. It makes you want to read more, and drawns you into it. You can easily tell either if its a happy, or sad poem, from its tone.
