Definition: the person that is trying to reach out and speak to the audience, or reader.
Example:
"Only your word will heal the injury
To my hurt heart, while yet the wound is clean
Your two great eyes will slay me suddenly
Their beauty shakes me who was once serene" -Geoffery Chaucer

This would be an example of "speaker", because the poet is trying reach out to the reader, and put the audience in his shoes, and view the poem through his eyes.
Significance: There is an importance in speaking, because speaking is the whole purpose of poetry. It is to reach out and express the emotions, or feelings the reader should be experiencing through the poet's words.
