Definition: A symbol in a poem is used to express thoughts, emotions, and feelings, through words with meaning.
Example:
The Sick Rose:"O Rose, thou art sick.
The invisible worm
That flies in the night
In the howling storm
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy,
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy."
Signficance: Symbolism in a poem is by far the most important element. Without it, the whole purpose for a poem would be pointless. A poem is supposed to be used to express thoughts, feelings, and emotios, but you cant do the following without symbolism. Symbolism is used for bringing forth object, action, or emotion through words with deep and powerful meaning.
